Milestones
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, a milestone is defined as the following;
mile•stone
Pronunciation: ‘mI(-&)l-”stOn
Function: noun
1 : a stone serving as a milepost
2 : a significant point in development
While you likely recognize that a milepost doesn’t exactly tie into Adult ADD, I’ll state the obvious and say, milestones are very important achievements in dealing with ADD. The first step in achieving a milestone is to set your goal. Second, you need to define what your steps are to achieve your goal.
Once your steps and goals are defined, it’s up to you to succeed. With ADD, the steps along the way lead to milestones. There are many different goals you can achieve, and simplifying your goals by steps or milestones breaks down what can sometimes appear as a monumental task into smaller steps, or milestones.
Setting up these steps or milestones makes a big task seem easier to accomplish and it will keep you focused on the task at hand, not the end result. While we all want to achieve the end result or goal, we often lose site of what it takes to get there. By focusing on smaller steps within the goal, we work towards these milestones one step at a time and before you know it, mission accomplished!
Here are simple 5 steps I recommend to assist you in meeting your goals;
1. Decide what your goal is first
2. Break down your goal and determine what the required steps are to achieve your goal
3. Set 3 important milestones within the steps of achieving your goal
4. Stay focused on the sequence of steps and milestones you have planned out
5. Forget about the goal, put it out of your mind. The steps and milestones will result in your goal being achieved
“Milestones must be concrete, specific, measurable events, defined with knife-edge sharpness.”
