“Fore!” is shouted as a warning when it appears possible a golf ball may hit other players or spectators. It means “ahead”, and it’s believed to come from the military “beware before”, which was shouted when shooting battery behind the troops. Ya gotta love Wikipedia!!
So, where is the tie-in to ADD you ask? Well, the game of golf is an event I have come to enjoy. I wish I had more time to play rounds regularly, I guess in my retirement that opportunity will become a reality. I referred to golf as an event, because just the other day I took an approach to a game of golf like never before. It wasn’t a challenge or sport, or even an exercise in frustration. It was an event, which I viewed as a way to better understand myself and where I was at in my winning effort against Adult ADD.
With Adult ADD, we try to gain better control of our thought process, emotions, temperament, open up to new ways of thinking and challenge our minds. Kind of sounds like a round of golf to me. Think about it, when you tee off and your ball makes a left hand turn into the forest, you need to control your temperament. When you are lying 150 yards from the green and there is a sand trap to the left and water behind, you need to think, strategize and follow a thought process in order to succeed on this hole. When you need a big shot but your ball is inconveniently located behind a tree, you need to get creative and think outside the box, maybe even take a step backwards for a little gain by the end of the hole.
While golf is a game, it can be much more than that. So too can many other events in your life that require you to think outside the box, control your temperament, strategize and organize your thoughts to maintain a calm emotional state of being. The next time you find yourself or someone you know challenged by ADD, make it an event to see how you approach it and you just may find you end up making par, OK, maybe a bogie if you golf like me!!
