If you share the understanding that the perfectionistic attitude and goal of inner peace are in conflict with one another, you may be in tune with the teachings of Recovery International, a world-wide self help organization founded in 1937 by neuroscientist and psychiatrist, Dr. Abraham Low.

If you find that you are in accordance with Richard Carlson's wonderful insights and values, you might want to learn more about Recovery International, as RI's teachings are very consistent with Carlson's teachings.

But, as we say in RI, wisdom is not enough. As much as we do not want to lose our tempers when dealing with everyday frustrations and aggravations, we are creatures of habit and often in spite of our knowledge and best intentions, we find ourselves getting extremely upset over trivial matters and acting in undesirable ways .

In order to employ these higher values in our everyday life, we have to change our habitual thinking and responses. And often that demands reprogramming ourselves not to react in habitual ways and that takes practice. A Recovery International meeting gives us an opportunity to practice exchanging the habitual thinking that stir us up, with thoughts that put things in perspective and have the power to keep us calm us and keep us in control. This method works. People get better. It has been a tremendous help to sufferers of anxiety, depression, anger problems, obsessive compulsive behavioral problems, etc.

By the way, meetings are free. We do pass a basket for free will donations.

Ann Landers speaking of Recovery, Inc. (now RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL) “Their record of success is phenomenal.

To learn more about Recovery International and find a convenient meeting, go to www.lowselfhelpsystems.org. The website offers forums, chat rooms, online meetings, and information about telephone meetings.
