As an ADD’er, I can tell you first hand how important exercise is to me. For almost everyone, that increased heart rate and great feeling we get when we are active delivers huge benefits. As I have written previously, exercise increases levels of dopamine in our brains. As a result, this provides emotional levity, the ability to focus, mental alertness and calmness……very important for folks with ADD.
One thing I have learned that works well for me and increases the benefits of exercise, is getting outside. That feeling of fresh air, especially in the fall is fantastic!! Working out in a gym can be stifling sometimes and it can be hard to maintain your levels of motivation. So, get outside!!! Going outside for even a quick walk is simple and easy. You really only need a decent pair of running shoes, that’s about it.
When you are outside there are no crowded gyms, posers looking in the mirror, no driving time to the local fitness facility and ladies……there is no need to put on makeup or special clothing to workout at the gym. Getting outside offers Vitamin D enhancing sunshine for our skin, even if it’s cloudy. You can work out anytime, anywhere……even on vacation
Just get outside. Ooppps, that sounds a little like a very familiar slogan that said “just do it”.
