Staying Focused During a Conversation

Mental clarity is required to concentrate on a conversation for a person with ADD, or anyone. I know people who don’t have ADD that can’t focus during a conversation.

As I’ve noted in previous posts, the brain requires natural energy and we can feed our body which in turn fuels that power the brain needs. This fuel for the brain or “brain foods” contains protein, like in meat, fish, milk and cheese. Grains, fruits and vegetables are key sources of carbohydrates. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential and are found in oily fish like salmon. No matter what you put in your body, there are also listening skills required to concentrate during a conversation. Here are a few tips many ADD’ers find helpful:
- Look someone in the eye when they are speaking
- Take notes to keep engaged
- Ask questions to help with focus and understanding
- If you can, eliminate external simulation and distractions
- Don’t interrupt, let people finish their point
- Stay calm, it can help with concentration

If only I knew about these tricks when I was married, but then again…….it probably wouldn’t have helped. LOL :)
