Transition or change can be a challenging hill to get over. Many people with ADD will tell you this is very true for them. Doesn’t matter if you have ADD or not, transition is hard. We need to keep an open mind when things change. Science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov said “Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It’s the transition that’s troublesome.”
You gotta love some of the famous Yogi Berra quotations, he was hilarious with comments like “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might end up someplace else.” I don’t remember the exact quotation, but I do recall something along the lines of “we are not judged by the outcome, but rather the path we take in order to get there”. That path is full of change and transition. If businesses don’t adapt and change to the market, they will not succeed. If people don’t adapt and change, they get left behind. Think of a few of those remaining technology opponents you might know, the ones who won’t email or utilize the internet, or text. They are on the verge of being left behind in so many ways. People with ADD sometimes have a fear of change or don’t adapt well to change. We don’t always manage stop and start well. We need to find ways to think about change, how it will impact us, what we need to do in order to adapt and then implement that plan. I’ve found asking myself these three questions very helpful in better managing change:
1. What is changing?
2. Is this change for the better?
3. What steps do I need to take in order to be a part of this transition?
Once I’ve answered these questions, my only remaining task is to set my schedule of events or tasks in place in order to accomplish what I need to, in order to better manage transition. Sometimes transition is forced upon us and on occasion, it isn’t for the best. My friends, that’s life. We need to find a way to get through it.
