Humility, it’s something many people need to work on. It’s all part of the narcissistic challenges many people with ADD face as well. I recently started reading a book called Good To Great by Jim Collins. Its about why some companies make the leap, and others don’t. Much of the book is geared around the type of leaders who run these companies and how a Level 5 Executive is what leaders should strive to be. The are 5 levels of people or leaders we can be, Level 5 being the ultimate goal. A Level 5 leader builds enduring relationships through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professionalism.
Think about how many ADD’ers you know, maybe you are one……and how the challenge of narcissistic habits may have impacted your life. The idea behind a Level 5 leader is that they channel their needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company. It’s not that Level 5 leaders have no ego or self interest. They are incredibly ambitious, but their ambition is first and foremost for their institution, not themselves.
With the narcissistic challenges faced by many ADD’ers, perhaps the philosophy and practices of a Level 5 leader might lend a hand.
“they channel their needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company”. Hoping more company leaders will follow this path.
