For most ADD’ers, the lack of dopamine the brain produces is a challenge. I’ve posted about this many times. Dopamine is at the core of our sexual drives and survival needs, and it motivates us to do just about everything. This mechanism within the reward center of the brain has been around for millions of years and has not changed.
In Squamish British Columbia (Canada) The Chief is one of the better-known hikes as it takes you up a humongous mountain-sized rock, a 700 meter massive granite cliffs that stands at the southern entrance to Squamish on the scenic Sea to Sky Highway on route to Whistler. Climbers take the hard way up 2,000 feet of vertical rock to the summit, where they can join the hiking crowd that has taken the trail up. I’m more of the hiking type, and that’s what I did last night.
Dopamine is behind a lot of the desire we associate with eating and sex. Similarly, all addictive drugs trigger dopamine, which helps to explain the addictive challenges many ADD’ers face. However, dopamine is also a natural way to counter ADD and provides emotional levity, the ability to focus, mental alertness and calmness……very important for folks with ADD. When I hiked The Chief last night, I got an extra dose of dopamine and experienced such incredible focus, levity and enjoyment. I’m not suggesting you go hike a 2,000 foot elevation and then navigate your way back down, it is after all an exhausting experience, but rewarding. My point, find something healthy that allows you to naturally get those levels of dopamine up and experience that amazing feeling of focus and levity. It’s great for anyone, whether you have ADD or not.
