ADD & The Wheel of Work

Had a good conversation last weekend with a friend who hates her job! It reminded me of a post I did about 18 months ago, so I thought I would republish it, enjoy!

Based on the self analysis tool The Wheel of Life, I came up with a quick evaluation to help understand the workplace, and look closer at the toxic job. I call it The Wheel of Work.

People with ADD need to evaluate and take stock in what works and what doesn’t work in their lives. Being self aware is very important. Personally, I have discovered what was toxic in my work environment and I will look differently at what a boss is like in my future. Hey, I may even be the boss again in the future, so this exercise will help me either way.

I did an informal study by reaching out to friends and working professionals I know. I asked them what four criteria were the most important factors that would impact the work place negatively. Based on my own personal thoughts and the feedback I received, the four most important factors that contribute to workplace negativity or the toxic job are as follows:

It’s really no big surprise that The Boss is the most noted category, according to my informal survey. Think about the importance of your boss in the workplace. There are many key elements to what a boss does or contributes. In my experiences, there are many challenges that can arise when you work with the wrong boss like:

- Communication
- Ego
- Insecurity
- Close minded
- Not a good listener

We all need to improve continually. Understanding who you are, what your strengths consist of and what challenges you is an important part of this process. Managing ADD and understanding what works for you in your career go hand-in-hand. Continue to understand this, it will create a better career path for you.
