What you put into your body determines who you are. The food and liquids you consume will shape how you function as a person, and this is a serious consideration if you have ADD.
The body fuel you put into you, will determine how your brain works. We all need maximum brain functionality to achieve goals in life. The foods you eat will directly impact the performance of your brain. The right food can boost your IQ, improve your mood, offer emotionally stable, sharpen your memory and keep your mind focused. Hmmmm, sounds like many of the symptoms of ADD doesn’t it?
They say (they being the nutritional and medical experts) there are three key “brain foods” that will boost your brainpower and keep your brain healthy. These “brain foods” are nutritious food, water and oxygen. Nutritional food contains protein, like in meat, fish, milk and cheese. Proteins are used to make brain neurotransmitters and are essential to improve mental performance. Nutritional foods also contain carbohydrates, which help you feel calmer, relaxed and provide energy. Grains, fruits and vegetables are key sources of carbohydrates. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the optimum performance of your brain too. Omega-3 fats are found in oily fish like salmon, sardines, trout, tuna, herring, mackerel and anchovies. Water makes up 83% of the blood and acts as a transport system, delivering nutrients to the brain and eliminating toxins. Thus, the importance of drinking water and ensuring you are properly hydrated is clear. Your brain needs to be fully hydrated so that the circuitry works well and it functions at optimum levels. Oxygen is the third “brain food”, and can be found in an exercise routine that is right for you. Exercise delivers blood and oxygen to the brain.
So, there is some food for thought for you. The next time you crave that quick fast food stop, bag of chips or other not-so-good food, remember how important it is to fill up on the right foods. Your vehicle needs the right fuel to start, an engine needs oil to run, what does your body need today?
I was pleasantly surprised, when I began taking magnesium for muscle pain on the advice of a naturopath, to find that it helped greatly with ADD and depression, also. Exercise and water have also been key, as you’ve found. A little bit of protein goes a long way; green leafy vegetables, I don’t think I can possibly get too much of.
