Working On Your ADD? Reward Yourself

Many ADD’ers around the world have been working on ways to manage their ADD/ADHD. There is a never ending source of information online, in books and through ADD coaching as well. Through the coaching process and just about every other source, I managed to make some great improvements in my life and learn what my strengths and weaknesses were with ADD.

Having climbed the mountain and won the battle, one of the little things many people including me tend to do, is forget to reward ourselves. Life’s little victories need to be acknowledged too. The work we put into accomplishing something, whether it is related to ADD or not, needs to have some reward attached to it sometimes. Recognizing yourself in a way that isn’t narcissistic or conceded is important, and being sure to give yourself a pat on the back sometimes matters. Taking a step back and realizing what you have accomplished is part of growing and learning. Maybe you’ll treat yourself to a vacation, a chocolate bar, a nice bottle of wine, an afternoon off work or that decadent dinner that you’ve been craving. Congratulations!

One Response to Working On Your ADD? Reward Yourself

Jeff, you are absolutely right–rewarding ourselves is so important. Sometimes we expect perfection of ourselves, which of course is completely unrealistic! We tend to be quick to point out our failures and to trivialize our successes. How unfair we our to ourselves–we would never treat our best friends, our spouses, or our children the way we treat ourselves!

This is one of the many ways ADD coaching can help provide perspective and remind us to celebrate our victories, big and small.

I suggest having a “cheat sheet” that is a list of ways to reward yourself–some rewards will be small, some large, and others will fall somewhere in between. Of course you can always choose something that isn’t on the list, but having the list gives a starting point and is a way to ensure that we have some ideas about how WE want to be rewarded.
